Tribute to Janice, our friendly neighbour

Created by Jo 3 years ago

Janice was a very kindly and loving person, who did a lot for our little village. She was the one who always went to visit and help the poorly and elderly - nothing was too much trouble.

She was also an active member of the Southsea Tenants & Residents Association and also later, The Southsea Action Committee. My husband, Fred, used to blame her for eating all the biscuits at our meetings, even though it was he, himself, who had committed the "heinous crime" - Janice was always ready to laugh with the rest of us at the "daft" things in life.

Nothing baulked her, she was up for everything, organising and raising funds for several successful village events, including the annual Easter egg hunt in Plas Power woodland, whereby all the children had to look for hidden eggs, with Easter Day quizzes for the adults too; summer barbecues in the recreation playing field (where the grass was once short enough to walk and play on!); village Halloween nights whereby we all walked around the village, knocking on doors with the children dressed up in their spectacular costumes and ghoulish make-up; bonfire nights where, after visitors had gone home, we used to sit in a big circle around the bonfire and get as "drunk as lords" with a contribution of homemade wine from one of the villagers (no names mentioned) - it was a good job we only had to walk to our homes. Unfortunately, village bonfire nights had to be abandoned due to new, expensive fire insurance regulations)!!

Janice was also involved in several successful village projects, including the raising of awareness of the huge, full to capacity, water lagoon on higher ground just above the houses, which threatened to "drown" our village if we had another heavy rainfall - it was Janice who got the Wrexham Leader involved, producing a quite dramatic front page news photograph of the imminent danger to the village.

Another successful project was the prevention of a planned 4 x 4 racing track in Plas Power woodlands (the Wrexham Leader again reported on this).

And also, sadly, an unsuccessful six year "fight" to save our huge grazing field on which we used to hold various village events, including the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, involving the organisation of food, gazebos, games such as three-legged races, egg & spoon, skipping and sack races (Janice was actually photographed dressed up as a 1940s boy with a cap, shirt, short trousers with braces & long woollen socks and lace-up shoes) in the skipping and three-legged races. Everybody knew her and everybody loved her and she will be a sad loss to our village.

Rest in Peace our beloved Janice,

Josie and Fred Prince xxx
